The Re-Cork program is making an effort to recycle corks from the valley & surrounding areas.

The Shenandoah Valley Art Trail grows more each months. People were driving by with newsletters and newspapers in hand to see the May ArtSee box at King Street Art Works in Strasburg.

People were driving by with newsletters and newspapers in hand to see the May ArtSee box at King Street Art Works in Strasburg. The boxes are provided by a local distribution company as a way to call attention to the galleries, cafes, and shops that carry work by local artisans, authors and musicians. “Cary Sober and Dennis Wymer designers of the inaugural box did a great job” said Ron Anderson who donated the paint for the project. “They created a comical and festive way to say art can be fun.” he went on.

“It was a hoot watching people committing drive-by photography” said Marcy McCann whose LtdPrints.com studio shares storefront space with KSAW. “People slowed down, camera in hand too reach out to snap a photo. Other photographers would stop to position family and friends in the same pose that Dennis and Cary struck when the box went out on May 1st.” she said.

Because it proved to be so popular Fran Romeo of Fran Romeo & Company invited the ArtSee box to her shop in Edinburg. An Wine was staffing the gallery when Fran arrived for the trade off.

“We are delighted that our artist’s work has proved so popular and that it will live another month on the porch of Fran’s store.” she stated. “It is through businesses in each town along Route 11 working together that we will draw tourists and new residents to the downtown areas.” she went on.

The June ArtSee box in front of King Street Art Works’ gallery is a Town Crier created by Tony Coviello and Linda L. (Elle) Anderson.

“The boxes provide printed materials such as newsletters, fliers, and pamphlets promoting art and music related events throughout the Valley so the Town Crier theme seemed like a natural.” said Coviello. The bright red box and large paper mache head have attracted its own fans already. “More people are coming to see the boxes as time goes on” he said. Those translate into art buyers which is good for the economy of the whole region.

The Art Trail runs from 234 West King Street in Strasburg to Fran Romeo & Co., at 212 N. Main St. in Edinburg with new locations coming on board soon. KSAW is open seven days a week. Call 540-465-3878 or KSAW234@gmail.com for more information.

Now that the new King Street Art Works gallery is up and running it is time to turn our attention to the Stay Longer, Return Often wall decor project that Allon Lefevor recently approved.

The concept is to showcase about 50 of the hundreds of exciting and entertaining things to do along the historic Old Valley Pike now known as Route 11. The photographic art will focus on about a 20 mile stretch in either direction keeping the travel time to about 15 minutes. Historic sites, fine eateries, and places to play will be among those featured. The Hampton Inn and Suites located at Exit 283 in on Interstate 81 affords a beautiful decor with each guestroom finely appointed down to the stunning local images on the walls. This Hampton Inn recently won the distinction of being Number 1 in Virginia in customer service as well as 5th in the nation.

For the past three months artists and art lovers have come together to create the first professional art collective and gallery in Strasburg. King Street Art Works or KSAW as it is being called is across from Cristina’s Cafe another art lover’s stop along historic Route 11. Twenty Five artists from Winchester to Staunton have brought an eclectic selection of paintings, pottery, fabric arts and jewelry into the newly decorated space. Adding an international flair artists from Russia and Germany bring a special look. In fact Valentina Dimilo a Russian Batikist sold the first piece before the doors are officially opened. The lovely Madonna and Child Batik wall hanging was sold to Richard Seelback of Bygones Antiques and Art just down the street after he visited during a recent morning stroll.

Linda L. Anderson whose mixed media work was featured in a recent article announcing the gallery’s formation is a professional exhibit installer. Ms. Anderson was hired to hang each member’s work to best showcase the pieces and tie the entire exhibit together. “Ms. Anderson was a Godsend” said Marcy McCann the inspiration behind the gallery. “She’s done a fabulous job bringing the various artist’s work together into a cohesive collection. The colors, textures and types of work create an feast for the eyes.” she said.

Diane Artz Furlong a life long native of Strasburg said “I’ve been waiting my whole life for this gallery to open. Painting is something I’ve done since my teens and now to be part of this makes me very proud.” It was Diane who came up with the name King Street Art Works. And at this trendy and hip little gallery she is right. King Street “art works” to enliven your soul, makes your spirit dance and will add excitement to your walls.
